When a team of freedivers set out to complete a 24 hour underwater relay in Sydney,
Your Story was there to capture the endurance, preparation, teamwork and community behind the achievement.
Filming a 24 hour underwater relay is not just about pointing cameras at a pool.
The challenge was to capture a world record attempt as it unfolded in real time, while allowing the athletes, support crew, safety team and volunteers to stay focused on the attempt itself.
The production needed to cover the action in the pool, the emotional moments around the athletes, the overnight endurance, the volunteer effort and the bigger purpose behind the event.
For 24 hours, a team of freedivers moved through the water, lap after lap, breath after breath.
The event was created to raise awareness for Rainbow Club Australia. However, it quickly became more than a record attempt. It became a story of endurance, preparation, community and trust.
Because this was a Guinness World Record attempt, every moment needed to be recorded from start to finish.
Every lap mattered. Every changeover mattered. Every key moment mattered.
Without continuous documentation, the record may not have been verified.
About four hours in, the unexpected happened.
Someone accidentally shut off the power.
Thankfully, we had prepared for this possibility. We had multiple cameras and backup systems in place, so the attempt could keep going.
As a result, the athletes stayed focused, the team stayed calm and the record attempt continued.
By the end, the team completed 97.95 kilometres underwater and 3,918 laps, achieving a new world record.
But behind the numbers was something bigger.
It was a story of people coming together for a cause that truly mattered.
For a world record attempt, there are no second chances. Our role was to capture the story as it unfolded, while making sure the attempt was continuously documented from start to finish.
We used multiple cameras to capture the action, emotion and atmosphere across the event. This also gave the production redundancy, which became critical when the power was accidentally shut off four hours into the attempt.
For the record to be verified, the attempt needed to be documented without interruption. Our setup helped ensure the story and evidence continued to be captured, even when the unexpected happened.
This was more than a sporting achievement. We captured the athletes, volunteers, support crew and cause behind the event, so the final film showed the heart of the story, not just the numbers.
With a long overnight production, safety requirements and a live world record attempt unfolding, the team needed to stay calm, flexible and ready to solve problems quickly.
